I know what it’s like to watch your puppy struggle with anxiety. When I was 8, I brought home my first Cavoodle, Oscar. He was everything I ever wanted in a puppy: sweet, gentle, and so loved by our family. But despite his loving nature, he battled anxiety in ways we couldn’t understand at the time.
Every time there was a sudden noise, like a door slamming or a car backfiring, he would flinch, his body trembling, and then dart away in fear. During fireworks, he would destroy the curtains, frantically pacing around in a panic. On stormy nights, he would shake so violently that we would have to sit up with him for hours. Worst of all, when we left him alone at home, he figured out how to scale our fences and escape the house, leaving us feeling completely powerless and worried we would never find him again.
I remember the guilt that weighed on us. We loved him so much, but we couldn’t help him feel safe. We turned to puppy school, hoping it would teach him the skills he needed, but it wasn’t enough. Puppy school didn’t cover the real-life situations — like how to deal with an overstimulated puppy when they’re home alone or how to help them cope with everyday sounds and situations.
The Problem
That’s when I realised: the training Oscar needed wasn’t being taught in puppy school, and it wasn’t something anyone else could fix for us. So, I made a decision. I was going to learn everything I could about early puppy development, behaviour shaping, and how to prevent anxiety before it even started. I wanted to give Cavoodles the tools to feel confident, calm, and secure from the start — without the stress and heartache we experienced with Oscar.
The Learning & Development Faze
For the past decade, I threw myself into studying, working with animals, and becoming a puppy school trainer. I worked at my local Veterinary Clinic in the hospital, worked in a boutique grooming salon and started breeding Cavoodles, determined to create a better experience for families than what I had gone through with Oscar. I created a training plan focused on socialisation, confidence-building, and behaviour shaping — and I tested it successfully on all my litters of Cavoodles who have never struggled with anxiety before keeping a puppy for myself so I could officially film the program.
For 28 days, I filmed every step of Joey’s journey. From his first experiences with crate training, learning to settle on cue, and going on socialisation outings, I documented it all. I included every little tip, every trick, and every strategy that worked to build his confidence and calmness. I wanted to create something easy to follow — something that would remove the overwhelm families face when raising their first puppy...
